North}, abstract = {Publisher Summary This chapter highlights the conservation of metals. The principle aim of all marine iron treatment methods is to remove the chlorides from the corrosion products. If this is done successfully, the enhancement of the corrosion process by chlorides ceases and the rate of corrosion is reduced to a more reasonable level where conventional anticorrosion methods can operate effectively. To prevent deterioration, the objects must be treated or stored under suitable conditions immediately after excavation. The removal of concretions from artifacts, or vice versa, can take place either on-site or at the conservation laboratory. It is frequently necessary to carry out chloride analysis on a wide range of solutions and corrosion products.} }
